Abstract
The asphalt mixture milling process is one of the main factors of environmental issues in the industry of engineering, which generates significant amounts of Recycle Pavement Asphalt (RAP). Several engineering solutions were explored in the scope of the use of RAP aggregates in new mixtures. On the other hand, soybean oil partially epoxidized is a material of renewable origin that has shown potential for application in paving. Thus, the objective of this research was to investigate the use of these materials in the construction of Chip Seal (CS) using a bio-emulsion from soybean oil in the rejuvenation of aged binder. For this, granite is replaced with aggregate recycled from RAP, attempting to the arbitrary rates of 0%, 33%, 66%, and 100%. The rejuvenating bio-emulsion was applied to the alternative material at a rate of 0.1 L/m². The performance of the CS was evaluated by the Wet Track Abrasion Test (WTAT), which allows an adaptation for ravelling assessment. Results show that the rates of 33% and 66% underperformed during the WTAT procedure. However, there was a large improvement in performance for both rates after the addition of bio-emulsion, including the samples with the total substitution for
recycled aggregate from RAP. It is concluded that the use of soybean oil bio-emulsion has viability in CS construction using RAP, where the improvements are understood for some activation of the aged binder.
