Abstract

American Sign Language (ASL) is the language of Deaf people and those who are a part of Deaf culture. While there was not a dictionary of ASL until 1965, the language has been around for over 200 years. While ASL has no written form and is not universal, it is a true language entirely different than spoken English. Understanding ASL and the communication style it embodies is essential in communicating with Deaf individuals. This presentation will speak to the nuances of the language and best practices for interacting with someone whose primary language is ASL.
