A vital prerequisite for applying phased arrays to nondestructive evaluation (NDE) is to develop an understanding of how certain key transducer parameters influence the radiated sound field in the medium. In this manner, one can establish the capabilities and limitations of phased arrays and apply these findings to develop an optimum design to solve a specific inspection problem.
