Abstract

A vehicle’s suspension is a complex system that requires great attention, early in the engineering design of the vehicle. This one system massively impacts driver and passenger comfort, performance, and efficiency. In this project, the goal was to improve upon the suspension of past solar vehicles built by PrISUm Solar Car, a student organization of Iowa State University, by implementing air springs, rather than the more traditional coil-over spring. The investigation included theoretical and experimental comparison of air springs and the traditional coil-over. Criteria investigated included spring rate, energy absorption, and ease of implementation. In the end, a prototype air spring was fabricated and tested, to reveal only a slight variation from calculated results. Overall, the air spring proved to produce superior performance numbers, while being substantially more difficult to package and implement on the real solar vehicle.
