| dc.description.abstract | <p>Economic activity in the U.S. has continued its strong expansion so far this year. Employment and income gains brought an 8 1/2 percent boost in consumer spending during the first quarter. Total business investment was up 8 percent, including a 13 percent rise in outlays for facilities and equipment. Government spending showed a 9 percent gain, with most of the increase for military needs.</p> | |
