Abstract
The purpose of this project was to address a specific area in the current Iowa State Civil Engineering curriculum. Specifically, this project was intended to increase students’ experience with Civil 3D® while still in school, particularly in the surveying courses. Civil Engineering is a vast field that covers a variety of disciplines. Daily tasks vary from company to company, but a “common language” between all surveyors and civil designers is computer aided design (CAD). One of the most widely used CAD programs available is Civil 3D®. The previous degree of structured CAD instruction in the CCEE department was limited to a brief overview in CE453 (Highway Design) and CE485 (Capstone Design), but was completely absent in CE111 and CE417 (survey courses). A template specifically for survey applications was created which will allow students to create professional style documents. This project created many resources for implementation in the spring of 2018. Several tutorial videos, a comprehensive instruction manual, and over fifteen new laboratory assignments were created for CE111 and CE417. One assignment was given to CE111 sections during the fall 2017 semester. One-hundred percent of the twenty-six participants confirmed that additional structured CAD is essential for students in this department.
