dc.description.abstract <p>My goal for this project is to successfully produce a quality piece of children’s literature and record the preparation and research required to achieve this goal. I will start by researching previously published bilingual books to provide foundation for code-switching (i.e. switching between two different languages) in bilingual children’s books and successful examples of such. I will then do a simple poll of plot and genre interest from a group of students from Pre-K to 6th grade. These two means of research will help me decide on a plot. After deciding on a concrete storyline, I will research how to write the book. I will research the effects of Spanish-English books on bilingual children, the methods and effects of code-switching, and the reasons for prominence or lack thereof of bilingual books in schools. From this research and analysis, I can begin writing and illustrating my book and creating my poster presentation. Simultaneously writing, illustrating, and revising the book’s text and illustrations will require extensive work in regards to matching translations between the two languages, using correct grammar and vocabulary in Spanish (my second language), and developing age appropriate expression of my story. All of these required skills pertain specifically to both of my majors: Spanish and Elementary Education. I will not only improve my Spanish speaking, vocabulary, and communication skills with this intensive translation and grammar work, but my ability to communicate and relate with children in general as well. The aspiration I have for my Spanish-speaking career is to work with Spanish speaking children and to teach Spanish to non-native Spanish speakers. To write a book that has both Spanish and English working together to tell a story will help my use of both languages become more relevant and precise to all children, regardless of their native language.</p>
