Restraint and Anesthesia of Uncommon Veterinary Patients

Abstract

<p>The presentation of small mammals, birds, and reptiles as patients can create considerable problems for the veterinarian. Oftentimes the veterinarian feels uncomfortable handling uncommon pets for fear of injury to the pet or clinic staff. This often sends the veterinarian searching through textbooks hoping to find a short and concise section dealing with the patient at hand. With the knowledge of large variations existing in attitude, drug sensitivities, and metabolism, veterinarians must have the ability to competently handle these animals. The manner in which veterinarians approach and handle animals is of utmost importance since the owner is often present.</p>
