Abstract

The second week of May was dominated by a stagnant low over the Great Lakes that pumped cool northern air and intermittent showers across Iowa. For the week of May 7-14, we accumulated the equivalent of about 3 normal days' worth of heat for crop growth. Corn and some soybean fields are emerging, but growth has been slow. Thankfully, crop breeders have given us crop genetics that seem able to handle the cool weather. Once temperatures moderate, as expected this week, fields should shape up nicely.
