Abstract
The research design delves into the intricate relationship among cognitive offloading, learning, and memory retention within the community of regular ChatGPT users. Utilizing the 5-step Design Thinking process, the study strives to enrich the user experience by incorporating multimedia principles into the redesign of ChatGPT, integrating critical and creative thinking. The primary objective is threefold: to evaluate the current user experience and perceived effectiveness of ChatGPT in facilitating learning and memory retention for students and educators, to pinpoint key pain points and challenges hindering effective learning and memory retention in educational settings through ChatGPT usage, and to formulate practical recommendations for redesigning ChatGPT to address identified issues, thus enhancing its usability and effectiveness in promoting learning and memory retention. Competitor analysis uncovers a gap in AI assistants for effective learning, underscoring the necessity for collaborative efforts within the AI community. The study is guided by three primary objectives: evaluating ChatGPT's current efficacy in supporting learning, identifying usage challenges that impede learning and memory retention, and suggesting practical redesign recommendations through collaborative efforts. By empathetically addressing users' experiences, the study introduces solutions rooted in multimedia principles based on Mayer's theory. The study focuses on the 4C's—critical thinking, creative thinking, communicating, and collaborating—as intervention points. The proposed design specifically aims to enhance these skills among ChatGPT users. Preliminary design evaluation indicates positive impacts on cognitive offloading and memory enhancement. This collaborative approach underscores the significance of effective communication between AI and users, fostering user-centric AI interactions. The UX study emphasizes the importance of Human-Computer Interaction principles, critical and creative thinking, and collaborative efforts in shaping intelligent human-computer interactions for a more enriched learning experience.
