Seven years after his parents' death, a man who goes by the name of Ghost returns to the Valley where he was born and raised. He moves back into his parents house and befriends a local prostitute, Kayla, who vaguely reminds him of a woman he once loved. Ghost is immediately visited by different characters from the past, each of whom wants something from him. Nat Hayden, the good-natured neighbor who has been watching over Ghost's land since he's been gone, encourages Ghost to sign his land over to a preservation movement Nat is organizing. Meanwhile, the corrupt Sheriff, Inman Lee, whose history with Ghost's family is sordid, pressures Ghost to sell his land to make room for a new golf resort meant to attract tourism to the Valley. Ghost must chose what to do with his land, negotiate the strange relationship that develops with Kayla, and struggle to keep the Sheriff and his worsening threats from hurting those he cares about. All the while, Ghost is forced to relive the memories of events that led up to his parents' death -- memories that have haunted him for seven years, and that have the potential to destroy Ghost's plans for a happy ending in the Valley.
