Abstract
This research describes the synthesis of an ester functionalized 2,3-disubstituted diene, 2,3-bis(4-ethoxy-4-oxobutyl)-1,3-butadiene, to produce and modify functional polymers. The polymer was synthesized via free-radical bulk and solution polymerizations. The polarity of the material, high thermal and thermooxidative stability and the ability to modify the functionality are attractive and potentially useful features. Potential applications include new polymer blends, dispersants, and membranes. Modification of polystyrene-butadiene rubber is also possible. The addition of this polymer into a variety of these materials could alter the adhesion, solubility and processing leading to tailor-made materials.
