Abstract

For the first half of the year, agriculture drew attention as a bright spot in the economy. Net farm income rose - largely because expanding livestock prices pulled gross farm income upward faster than production expenses were rising. And low spots in hog and cattle slaughter coincided with temporary crop reverses. At the same time, high demand for farm products continued in spite of the recession. A falling off in agricultural exports hit government surplus disposal but didn't strike down to the farm level.
