Abstract
This handbook provides information about the 2022 Region 5 Soil Judging Contest. This manual provides the rules, scorecard instructions, and additional information about the contest. This material has been adapted from previous handbooks, with some modification. Other references used to develop this handbook include Soil Survey Manual (Soil Division Staff, 1993), Field Book for Describing and Sampling Soils v 3.0 (Schoeneberger et al., 2012), Keys to Soil Taxonomy 12th edition (Soil Survey Staff, 2014), Soil Taxonomy 2nd edition (Soil Survey Staff, 1999) and the Illustrated Guide to Soil Taxonomy v 2 (Soil Survey Staff, 2015). In keeping with recent contests, emphasis is placed on fundamentals such as soil morphology, taxonomy, and soil-landscape relationships.
